Hi guys...wow...I am trying to get my dates organized and just thought I would annouce a few fun things here in case you want to mark your calendars.

I hope you are all having a great holiday season and have a safe and happy new year -- and rest up because this is just a few fun things in 2010 (i have another list yet to be confirmed)!!!!

Wow...2010 if rolling in fast and we already have a ton of fun events coming!

Jan 23rd - Show and Hafla at the Dnote with a GREAT line up
Jan 23-24th - Shimmy 2B Free PreFundraiser with Phoenix, Selayma & Taka - Workshops working with Energy and Space along with a show

April 10th - April Fool's Spring Fling Show and Hafla at the Dnote (This is going to be fun!!)

June 10th-13th - Shimmy 2B Free with Princess Farhana in Colorado! Four days of fun for a great cause

June 25th-27th - Shimmy 2B Free in California (Yeah...we are growing!)

August 7-8th - A weekend of fun with a Hafla at the Dnote and the release of BELLY here in Colorado!

Of course...working on the dates for the yearly bellydance swap and our october show/hafla! Those will be confirmed later along with some student shows and festivals and more (including some other states to look for me in).

Intensify your performance and presence using the four elements and visualization. Use the energy of the fire, water, air and earth to change your presentation and experience in dance. Phoenix will provide body movements and combinations along with music ideas to awaken each of the four elements within you. Use the elemental energy to improve technique and gain new combination ideas. Join Phoenix as we awaken the elemental energy and goddess within each of us! 1215pm-215pm: Dancing Your Sacred Space - Selayma ($32/45) Choreography utilized to learn concepts of defining your Sacred Space during performance. Along with space, learn to allow your audience into your sacred space, add intensity & drama, gather energy from within and highlight those aspects of the music you cherish most. Join Selayma to define and dance your sacred space!

230pm-430pm: Mind, Body & Soul - Taka ($32/$45) Taka will guide dancers through meditation and visualization techniques that will ground the dancer within, and increase her awareness of her movements in her body. This workshop will focus on dance technique, while honing in, and awakening awareness with in one's body. Be prepared to open your heart, and feel how each aspect of the intricate movements of belly dance correlate to your mind, body and soul.

looking for a class

Can any help me? I am looking to start taking classes and i am finding very limited options. I live in the denver/aurora area. I work monday through friday nights but have weekends open. I tend to do better in a group environment then in one on one. I have not explored all of the styles such as ATS or egyption but am willing to try almost any style. I do not care if i end up good enough to do student shows or not. I just want to explore further then a video on danceing will show me. Any help would be appreciated.

Dance & Zill with a New Perspective Workshop - A Workshop for all styles and levels of bellydance
Workshop from 230pm - 445pm

The workshop will work with two rhythms. The workshop will focus on creating the rhythm in your body, dance combinations and various zill patterns.

This is a workshop for all styles and levels. Phoenix will include cabaret and tribal fusion ideas in the combinations along with encouraging each perform to come up with their own ideas. For beginners, this will help in understanding what you are doing with the music in terms of zills and movement. For more advanced dancers, this will help to expand your zill patterns and come up with new ideas on accenting the music.

Phoenix approaches the zills from a different dancer to help those that struggle with zills and expand ideas for more experienced zill players. Phoenix combines the drummer & dancer perspective when teaching zills. This allows the dancer to understand the music rather than memorize the pattern. Learn new combos and utilize your own style/moves while gaining more confidence in with zills.

“Thrills, Chills and Drills”

“Intro to ATS (American Tribal Style)”

Topsy Turvy - Thanks to All

Hi guys...last night was a blast. Everyones performance was fun and creative......the crowd enjoyed it (feedback was great on all performers).

The band said time slipped up on them....but they did get to play some of the fun new songs they had practiced. DJ Slave1 had a good time too.

So thank you to all of you....it was a fun night....little chaotic at time with the contest but hey....its a party! I hope all have a great halloween season....you all kicked mine off right!!!

Monday Nov. 10th

I am a drummer. I will be at the Crowne Plaza hotel right by the Denver Convention Center. As of right now I have nothing to do on the evening of Monday the 10th. I have no car.

Is there anything drumming/dancing going on that night that I could get to? I know there are a lot of really good drummers in the Denver area. I would sure love to play with some of them.

What: Arabic Music Show & Dance Party, featuring Lebanese Master Percussionist Souhail Kaspar, the Saltanah Arabic Ensemble and Kailin Yong.

Experience live Arabic music on traditional instruments including oud, ney, qanun, violin, darbuka, riq and daf. IMPORTANT PARKING INFORMATION:

The Rockies have made the playoffs. Now there is a big game scheduled on Saturday at 7:30 PM. Therefore, the parking prices will be very high around the ball park.

Don't worry, there is plenty of cheap parking ($4) just four blocks away on Champa St. between 20th St. and 21st St.. Head east on 21st away from Coors Field and turn right on Champa St. There are two big parking lots on the left across from the Post Office. The area is well lit.

Alternatively, you can often find parking on the street. There is meter parking and free parking north of 20th. Watch the signs though and move your car so you don't get a ticket.

Train your muscles and mind to polish and further develop your belly dance abilities. This class will lead students through stretches, exercises, and drills specifically directed towards developing isolation, definition, and strength for belly dance. Come prepared to sweat and bring a yoga mat.

“Intro to ATS (American Tribal Style)”
Learn basic ATS movements with their cues and variations and learn how to use these movements in a variety of tribal improv belly dance applications. Using fast and slow movement we will explore how to take and pass the lead effortlessly, move in and out of formation/chorus, and examine the framework for two, three, and four person formations.
3:30-5pm
“Tribal Fusion Combos”
In this fast paced workshop students will learn to combine the best of both worlds; tribal posture and styling with classic cabaret isolations and footwork. Fast and funky as well as slow and slinky combos will be taught with enough TribalTique Signature Style to keep everyone challenged!

These are my mixed level and drill classes --- if you are more experienced and interested in more advanced classes, I do have two. One in Denver on Mondays and one in Northglenn on Wednesday. Contact me to discuss your level of experience.

A change of plans... : (

Hello everyone.

Due to a lack of local traffic & an increasing tour schedule, I am having to make some changes in my class schedule. I'm sorry of this inconveniences anyone, but I feel that this is the best thing to do to focus on my own training & performing. During this down time, I will be focusing on improving my technique & making a more comprehensive teaching format, so that I have more to share & a higher-quality product to give to this local community that I have grown to love so much.

I will be cancelling my Saturday 5:00pm-7:00pm classes in Widefield/Security/Fountain starting today. My Friday 5:00pm-7:00pm & Sunday 4:00pm-6:00pm classes in central Colorado Springs will continue through the end of September, but will resume in November. My Friday 10:30am-11:30am classes at Gold's Gym in Briargate will continue indefinitely.

From April to Labor Day weekend, I have been on 10 planes, 6 Greyhound buses, & 2 long car-rides, doing nearly 50 days of dance festivals & events in over 10 cities across 4 states. During these travels, I was honored to teach & perform, but also blessed to take workshops with Rachel Brice, Ariellah, The Mezmer Society, Elijah Sound, Tribe Marrakech, Zoe Jakes, Kami Liddle, DaVid of Scandinavia, Asharah, Suhaila Salimpour, Aziza, Rosangela Silvestre, Eric Handman, Hijack, Maria Vasquez, Yuko Suzuki, Domenico Giustino, Ray Schwartz, Monitor Mago, Sherri Wheatley, Kaya, & Sadie.

I have learned so much from all of these amazing people & also learned a lot about myself. I know that I have a lot to offer the world of dance, but know I am acknowledging that I still have so much to learn. These experiences have been unfathomable with opportunities to learn new things in the moment, & make plans & goals for the future that I hope to turn into dreams realized.

I thank you all for your support & gppd vibes. October through January has & looks to bring travels to another 7 cities across 5 states, all with their own opportunities to teach, perform, & (most importantly) to learn.

We'll see how this next step in my dance journey goes.

Zill and Improvisational Dance Workshops - plus a show

Hi all...
I have only about 6 slots left in the zill & improv dance series --- I am keeping this small due to the idea and concepts. The discount deadline has pasted but feel free to sign up if you are interested.
This is good for all styles as the dance moves and formations will be your own. I will give some ideas and combos for those that need it but the concept is more about improv and understanding the music......from a different perspective than your typical 'play this pattern' or triplet idea. There will be some music theory to really understand what we do as dancers and how we work with the music......makes it a lot more fun.

Zill Rhythms & Improv Dance Series

Workshops - Aug 15th & 29th

Performance/Intensive Class - Sept 13th

This series is for all styles of dancers - you will be using your own moves, personal style, and some new combos.

This is not a dance technique workshop series - instead a series focusing on zills, body rhythm, improvisational dance, and working with live drummers.

The workshop series was developed per many requests from dancers who have taken Phoenix's zill workshops.

The series will be 4 classes which will build on each other by starting out with easier rhythms to gain the understanding of the music and drums. As the series moves forward, the rhythms will become harder (different rhythms in each class). The fourth class is pulling this all together and working more with improvisation – this will require that you have taken at least one of the classes to know some rhythms to work with. To gain the most out of the series and learn a number of rhythms to use in your dance – the full series is suggested.

Phoenix approaches the zills from a different direction in this series…we will not be using triplets and alternates as much as the actual rhythms and variation on how to create new ideas with your zills.

The workshop focuses on 6 rhythms, variations of each, & creating the rhythm in your body.
Phoenix combines the drummer & dancer perspective when teaching zills. This allows the dancer to understand the music rather than memorize the pattern.
Learn new combos and utilize your own style/moves.

August 15th & 29th 10am-12:30pm & 1:30-4pm
The first three workshops works with the rhythms and movement.
This is a series and builds on the previous lesson.
Aug 29th 1:30pm: Improv - pulling the dance together with concentration on improvisation including exercises and ideas for developing your dance
~All workshops will go over variations of the rhythms, accents, combos for dance and more. The first workshop will be important in understand the music theory and drummer perspective.~
You must attend at least one workshop to attend Aug 29th 1:30-4pm workshop.
Discount Until July 15th: $30 individually, $55 1-day, $95 for all 4
After July 15: $38 individually, $65 1-day, $115 for all 4

Performance & Intensive Class on September 13th 1:30-3:30pm
After having 2 weeks to practice your skills - come back and work on the performance side of improvisational dance. This class will focus on the performance and presentation - adding to the improv, engaging your audience, enjoying yourself and separating the stage from 'dancing around the campfire'. You must attend one previous class in the series or contact Phoenix to attend September 13th.

Phoenix will share a number of combinations incorporating various styles including Egyptian, Turkish, and Tribal Fusion. Phoenix will go over the technique of each movement in the combinations and introduce ideas to add your own flair. Along with the combinations, learn to work with music and engage your audience using zills, emotion and drama. The combinations will include slow-slinky, fast-energetic and drum accents for a variety of ideas. Join Phoenix to shimmy, slink, slither and shake up new combinations for your routines and improvisational dance.

Note on zills: Zills are not required for the workshop but an option to add an additional dimension to the combinations and a challenge for more advanced dancers. Phoenix will not be teaching zills in the workshop but will discuss how to use them and give a quick overview. The patterns used will be triplets, alternates, 3-3-7 and drum accents. There will be a short discussion on the use of the zills to accent your body movement.

Initially drawn to the dance out of curiosity, Phoenix began belly dancing in 1997. Phoenix fell in love with the open expression and creativity that belly dancing offers. After studying with various teachers, Phoenix began teaching in 2002. Along with performing and teaching, Phoenix released the "Isis Wings with Phoenix" instructional DVD in 2008. Phoenix considers herself to be a lifelong student of dancing.
Phoenix’s background is diverse with focus on Egyptian Cabaret, Turkish, Khaliji, and Tribal Fusion. Phoenix enjoys sharing the beauty in the art form of dance by teaching, performing and sponsoring events. As a teacher, Phoenix works with each student to develop strength in movement, technique and create their own style. While Phoenix loves traditional belly dance, she enjoys moving out of the traditional realm and taking the dance down a different track. Phoenix approaches belly dancing from a spiritual and artistic direction. Her performances are most often improvisational and always from the heart.

Hi all .. I am going to have my yearly Isis Wings Workshop on Dec 5th. Due to schedules and such...I could not do this in the fall so pushed it to December. This is a 2.5 hour workshop. Details below....

Hi guys....mark the date for August 22nd - Elemental Show and Hafla. This is a special show and hafla that has been a vision of mine for a couple of years.
The show will celebrate the seasons and elements with peformances by Sultry Emberz, Zalzali, Tribal Tique (Denver, Fort Collins, and of course the awesome twosome or may be foursome not sure which), Sharaqa Shimmers, Indigo Rain, and Taka. Great line up of performances with a theme!

We will have the show at 7pm and open dancing directly following the show with Yallah!.
The Dnote also wanted me to mention that Mono Verde is going to be a band following the hafla. They are awesome too...Latin Reggae.

There is a new event happenning this coming weekend in beautiful Steamboat Springs! It is the All Arts Festival, a weekend of dance performance, culinary, vocal, musical, and literary arts. Jasmir Tribal Fusion will be performing on Sat, Aug 22nd, at noon. There will also be many different workshops representing all of the different arts, including a fun, fast paced SHIMMY workshop on Friday night, taught by Meg Widmer!

New to Boulder!

This weekend (July 25th and 26th) This lovely lady will be joining us for the majority of our shows, and ALL of our main stage shows. If you are visiting, we perform on the Celestial Stage (by the elephants) at 12 and 4. We also perform on the fountain platform, by Tiffany's Arts Myths booth - where she sells lovely masks, hats, and unique hair falls.

After this weekend there will be one last final huzzah on August 1st and 2nd.

A taste of the fundamentals of ATTS!
It's belly dance with tribal twist! The classes focus not only on dance moves and posture but also sharp technique, grace and fitness. The classes include a warm up and cool down, and a complete breakdown of moves, postures, and techniques. Everyone is welcome regardless of body type, shape, size or dance background. Please wear comfortable clothing. Please come dressed in a choli, tank top, or some other type of form fitting top (so we can insure proper posture, no t-shirts please), pantaloons or yoga style pants (something that will not restrict your movement), and a noiseless hip scarf (if desired). Students with zils (finger cymbals) are encouraged to bring them to each class. We usually dance barefoot. Please bring water to class.

Cost:
4 Week Session: $32 (for residents of Thornton)/$35( non residents)

Come learn theatrical stage makeup specifically designed for performers. Bring your makeup kit, a pair of false eye lashes and learn the tricks. Shimmy for the Cure - Radio and Reminder

Shimmy for the Cure is next weekend - June 11th - June 14th.

We kick it off with a henna party (free admission), hafla at Mercury, workshops, and a great show on Saturday night. I hope to see you there. Auditions
Time: 1-2 Minutes Tops
Music: Our player is CD and MP3 friendly.
Styles: Please perform the style you are best at, or the style for the part you are trying most to get.
Costumes: Feel free to come in costume as it will be taken into consideration.
Group/Solo: Groups auditioning must audition together. If your going for a solo role you must do a solo. You can audition for both to improve your odds of getting a part. So for example.... a troupe auditions together, and then each of that troupe can do their own solo.

CAST: Please Mark/Highlight or Bold all the parts you wish to be considered for.

SOLOS (In order of appearance)
The Traveler - Multi talented and versed in different styles. Mainly an Egyptian dancer.
The Curious Gypsie - Lead Gypsie roll. Very expressive. See gypsies for more info.
The Seductress/TheVillians Minion - Two ways to play this. One being obviously seducing...sexy.. the other being very gothic puppet like, trickster.
The Villian - Pure gothic, how evil and scary can you be?
The Heroine/The Goddess - Angelic, veil dance

(Keep in mind. These styles and ideas are not set in stone. Just what I see as being what they are.)

GROUPS
Gypsies - Tribal, Spanish, Circus, Contortion, and Others.
Forest Fairies - Fantasy
Forest Animals - African, Tribal, Goth
Darklings - Gothic
Angels - Wings of Isis

I have included a rough draft of The Story as of currently written to help give you an idea of how the show will flow and the role of each part. The show will be about an hour long giving each line 5 minutes. This is also not set in stone.

Act 1 ~ The Forest
The Travelers Intro....... walking threw the forest seeing...
Animals
Fairies

Act 2 ~ The Gypsie Camp
The Traveler happens upon a Gypsie camp...
Gypsie Drinking Games!!!!

~Intermission~

Act 3 ~ The Evil Lair
The Traveler is lurred into the lair by the seductress...followed by the curious one
Surrounded by the darklings the villian arrives and kills the traveler. =(
The curious one sees this and runs off to get help.

Act 4~ Help Has Come
The gypsies summon the heroine to help. (candle dance)
The Heroine and her angels turn the darklings back into their former selfs, and revive the traveler.
All celebrate and bow!! =)

SHERRI WHEATLEY - TRIBAL FUSION FUNDAMENTALS:
This workshop focuses on the fundamentals of Tribal Fusion Bellydance ranging from its ATS to the evolution of this style including more experimental fusion stylizations. Some previous Tribal Fusion experience is helpful, but not required. Open to all levels.

SADIE - SAMBA BELLYDANCE FUSION:
Brazilian Samba is one of Sadie and Kaya's most requested classes and workshops. This workshop will break down some of the most popular moves and foot patterns in the Samba no Pe.., the soloist dance seen at Rio's Carnaval and in many night clubs in Brazil, as well many of th traditional Afro-Brazilian movements and add them together in exciting choreography or short combinations. Get ready to have a great time, burn some serious calories and add some spice to your dance vocabulary. Open to all levels.

FRANK FARINARO - TRULA/BELLYNESIAN:
In this workshop we focus on elements of Tribal and Cabaret Bellydance as well as the Polynesian dances of Hawaii, Tahiti and Samoa. Both of these dances hold strong similarities in movement vocabulary. As we progress, we focus on fusing the different styles together to show how they complement each other.

Julianna will use her years of fitting experience to show you where to look for common fitting problems in belly dance costumes. You will be presented with basic information on how to alter your costumes and many tips about the types of sewing supplies to use. Information sheets will be provided at end of workshop.

3:45pm - 4:00pm: Fashion by Artsmyth
Handmade leather masks, specialty wing designs and more by Artsmyth.

4:00pm-4:30pm: Rafi'ah
Rafi'ah, as a prelude to her Drum Drama workshop at Shimmy for the Cure Weekend, will be demonstating and leading you through some of the techniques for the six-minute shimmy, adding diversity, layering and how to contast percussive moves with slinky arms and torso.

4:30pm-5:00pm: Suzanna
Suzanna Del Vecchio is a certified yoga instructor in the Iyengar method, which among many things focuses on detailed attention to body alignment. Suzanna will present how she uses this alignment in our dance to help create a strong foundation for good technique and greater awareness of the body mind connection.

New Belly Dance class in Boulder

Crazy 8's and Other Moves with Your Hips!

I'm proud to offer an intermediate Belly Dance Class focusing on fluid circles, figure eights, the elusive tribal taxeem and the ability to pop and lock these elements together. Learn some new drills, movements and combinations to add to your dancing style. Traditional cabaret moves along with the more recent tribal fusion elements will be explored in this class.

Class will normally consist of a warm-up, short finger cymbal drills, technique breakdown, movement drilling, combination, short improv exercise and a cool down.

Thursdays, June 4th - June 25th.
7:15-8:45 PM one and a half hour class (4 classes)
Cost: $40/session or $15 for a drop-in class

Please arrive early to your first class. The studio requires everyone sign a waiver and check in.

Please join The Boulder Tribe on the belly dance hill for the 31th annual Bolder Boulder, Monday May 25th early in the morning for some dancing and fun in the sun. This is a great excuse to get together and dance for the joy of it. Please come with an (American) tribal look (A La “Fat Chance Belly Dance” etc), or come in what you have or what you are comfortable wearing in front of 40 thousand people, some of which will be children. Belly Dance Hill is on Folsom between Valmont and Pearl Streets.

Dress for class: A choli or halter top and any pants or skirt that provides full range of movement with hip scarf, jeweled or tassel belt. Bare feet, socks or dance shoes are all appropriate. You will need your own zils

Class content will vary. Instructor Biography
Jennifer Secrist Goran, an American Tribal Style (ATS) General Skills Certified instructor, began her tribal bellydance training in San Francisco in 1989 with well known ATS founder, instructor and performer Carolena Nericcio, director of FatChanceBellyDance (www.fcbd.com). Jennifer was immediately impressed by the presence and poise of the instructor and by the powerful, organic feel of the dance. Occasionally, Jennifer tried her hand, or hip, with other talented belly dance instructors specializing in Raqs Sharqi, but, she knew her first love was with the form and aesthetic of American Tribal Style. To this day she remains a loyal student of Carolena's and still enjoys studying with her when in the Bay Area.

These photos will be taken on the D-Note Stage with the addition of professional studio lighting.

2:30pm - 2:45pm: Fashions by Julia of Tribal Tique
If you missed the debut of Julia's fabulous designs last year, you can
catch the new release this year! A special fashion show by Julia featuring
all new designs you can have for your very own collection. Of course, Molly will be there too!

3:00pm - 3:45pm: Fashions & Costume Fitting by Julianna's Wardrobe
Julianna will use her years of fitting experience to show you where to look for common fitting problems in belly dance costumes. You will be presented with basic information on how to alter your costumes and many tips about the types of sewing supplies to use. Information sheets will be provided at end of workshop. Julianna will also show a few of her own creations!

Suzanna Del Vecchio is a certified yoga instructor in the Iyengar method, which among many things focuses on detailed attention to body alignment. SFCCo - Update on Workshop Selling Out & Discounts for Workshops too

HI all – just an update on the availability of workshops, slots for Friday evening hafla, discounts for volunteers and discount deadline!

Please note that the Rromany workshop is filling up - so check with Phoenix after the discount deadline date to ensure there is room if you are waiting to register for Rromany/Skirt Dancing workshop with Artemis. We expect that one to be sold out by the discount deadline as it is well over ½ full now…and the registrations are coming in quickly for all (especially this one).

Also an update on the two Artemis workshops. Selayma attended the two workshops and would like to ensure that all understand the connection between the Sat/Sun workshops with Artemis:
The Saturday Turkish Rromany class will a clear differentiation of the Rromany rhythms, along with Artemis' explanation of movement,and a break down for many of the basic movements utilized, with Sunday's class for Turkish Oriental building on these movements and explanations, thereby incorporating Turkish Rromany into the Turkish Oriental.

The Friday night hafla slots are getting filled. If you wish to perform then you must register before getting a confirmation on your performance slot. Please understand that you are not confirmed until you have registered with Phoenix for the workshop(s).

We are still looking for a few volunteers to work the doors at a couple of the workshops and clean up after the show on Saturday & workshops on Sunday --- you will get a 15% discount on the workshop if you are volunteering. Contact Selayma about this.

Last of all...the discount deadline is May 15th so register soon to save some $$ out of your pocket book and also to ensure you get the workshops you want! Please have any mailed checks postmarked by 5/15/09 to receive the discounted price.

We are getting the program together for the Shimmy for the Cure Show.

Every year - we offer reasonable rates to advertise in the Shimmy for the Cure program. If you are interested in advertising your troupe, workshops, events, business, etc.....then contact Selayma at:

Business Card = $10.00 (usual BC size - over-sized BC's move up to half or full-size rates)
Half = $20.00 (5" x 3.75" -- this allows for margins/borders)
Full = $30.00 (5" x 8" -- this allows for margins/borders)
(sizes are based on an 8.5x11 sheet of paper folded in half, booklet style)

Selayma needs all ads by mid May if you would like to advertise in the program.

This year we are expecting a larger turnout with moving the location and also the weekend.....the ticket sales are already reflecting this. Soooo feel free to take advantage of some inexpensive advertising....their will be dancers and many non-dancers there so it does not have to be only bellydance goods......

Live show and workshops with Rachid Halihal

Hi Everyone!
I hope you all are well both in and outside of the music and dance world. Just
a reminder that there are some very exciting events with Rachid coming up this
month! And those that do not know Rachid... you are REALLY missing out!

THE MAIN EVENT

On April 29th (Wednesday) Rachid and his band will be playing a live event at the
Crossroads Theater in Denver at 7:30. You can visit their website at
www.denvercrossroads.com and purchase tickets online. Tickets are $18. There is
a small fee to purchase online, but it will be worth it to secure your seat!
Not only will there be time for open dancing, but there will also be bellydance
performances by Khadijah, Eva Cernik, Taka, and Sonia!.

Workshop for dancers

On April 28th (Tuesday) Rachid will be teaching a workshop focused on musicality
for dancers from 7pm-9 at Dance Fusion Studio. This workshop is designed for
experienced dancers who want to take their performance to the next level by
understanding how to correctly listen to and interpret the melodies of Arabic
music. Cost is $50

I just posted an event for SFCCo 2009. This year...we have some fun things in store. Also - we moved the event back to Swallow Hill. You wonder what that means....great stage, nice setting for workshops, coffee/snack bar during the show, and LOTS 'O' Parking! Rachid will be teaching a musicality class for dancers. This class is for dancers who already have a good understanding of technique and are looking for that "next level" to add to their dance. Rachid's extensive knowledge of classical Egyptian music and his experience working with dancers around the world make him uniquely qualified to teach this workshop. Dancers will come away with an understanding of how to work WITH the music and be able to correct many common mistakes of interpreting Arabic music.

I have personally studied musicality with Rachid, and I can tell you that the information he gives is INVALUABLE to any serious bellydancer. While there are an endless amount of dvd's and teachers who focus on technique, there are very few who focus on how to properly interpret music. "Properly" does not mean "cookie cutter" by any means, and Rachid works well with dancers to draw out their natural ability by teaching first and foremost how to listen to music.

Directions to studio:
(From the north)Take I-25, exit Broadway. Go north (left) to the first
street, Ohio, and turn right (east). Go about 5 blocks to S. Pearl St
and turn right (south). Go about four blocks to Mississippi and we
are on the southwest corner, in the same building as Pub on Pearl St.

(From the south) Take I-25, exit Downing St. Stay left (this becomes
Buchtel), go past Louisiana & Washington to South Pearl St. Turn
right (just past Whole Foods Market) The studio is on the west side.

Let's face it... sometimes we get busy & can't commit to make it to every session in a class series. Life happens when we least expect it. That's why my classes are designed for drop-ins. Each class is completely different. If you have to miss a class or two, you will not be left behind. You can take one class & miss the next three & not feel as though you are not out of the loop when you return.

Classes are designed to challenge & refresh dancers of ALL levels from beginner to professional. My classes focus on the foundations of Cabaret & Tribal styles of bellydance & then encorporating elements of fusion. Each class has a cardio, stretching & strengthining warm-up, technique drillsm choreography, Q+A, cool down, & moving meditation.

*Classes at Gold's Gym are available to BOTH members & non-members. Pricing is sublect to the policies of Gold's Gym. Please call them for pricing information for day passes, packages, &/or memberships.*

Classes at both 40 Thieves locations are $20.00 per class or $130.00 for a 10 class punch card.

NOTE: Students who have a 10 class punch card get free admission for themselves & one guest to any events held by 40 Thieves when cover is stipulated.

The Zill Rhythm and Improv Dancing Series
Aug 15th & 29th will include the bulk of the information
Sept 12th is an intensive and performance level class prior to the show
Sept 17th at the Swallow Hill - Show with Live Muscians from Yallah!

This has been a request from a number of dancers who have participated in many of my zill classes and workshops. I have developed the full series including tips and such for improvisational dance and working with live drummers.

Space is limited in the workshops and show - so sign up early. I will have the sign up and fliers posted on my site soon!

We will work on various rhythms, variations, creating your own variations, putting the rhythm in your body, and improvisational dance.
I am planning 2 days of zill work and improv with the option of a 2 hour question, practice, review, and whatever you need on Sept 12th just before the show.
This workshop is for all styles -- cabaret, tribal, tribal fusion. Also it will be geared for various levels of zill experience.

You will learn some combos with moves but often using your own moves and style. At the end of the series - we will have a concert with Yallah! at Swallow Hill for the workshop participants.

This Friday at 40 Thieves North is going to be our Rockstar Party!!! Performances by Bellydancer Frank Farinaro, Burlesque Dancers Peaks & Pasties, & Rock Band Paracusis.

There will also be hookah specials, free airbrush tattoos, giveaways for free tattoos & piercings from local tattoo/piercings parlors.

Doors open at 8:00pm
Show starts at 11:00pm
Admission is $5.00 per person
Bellydance Students of Frank get free admission for 2 with their punch card.

Must be 18+ to enter unless accompanied by a chaperone 25+.

May 30th - Yearly Belly Dance Swap

Hi all...so I am organized and ready to take sign up for the yearly belly dance swap sellers. See the info below and contact me via email rather than through tribe (phoenix_dancing@hotmail.com).

The swap space is limited and really more for those cleaning out that large vendors. If you are a vendor then you are welcome to come but will be limited in space. I do suggest that if you want a slot to sell...contact me soon as it gets booked up fast.

We will have some fun events too -- last year was a blast with fashion shows and more...so we are planning it again and have some new ideas for this year! Just fun to come out shop, swap, learn, and socialize. There is no admission for shopping but I do ask for a fee from sellers to pay for the fliers and advertising.

I am trying to get more and more organized with it each year....it is a lot more than most realize when 20 sellers show up at the same time to set up so bear with me ..... and my requirements below. These are to help ensure it is a fun day and successful for those of us cleaning out the costumes.

Due to the number of request – I am limiting space to 2 tables or 1 table with a rack per seller. This is a swap/yard sale so if you are a vendor then you will need to size down what you bring to fit the space.

This is a community event – prices of the space go to the advertising and cost of fliers to ensure we have a lot of shoppers.

If you would like to share a space then please add $2 for each additional person sharing and understand that you will be limited to sharing the space reserved. Our space gets very tight.

Once you have made payment then you will receive confirmation for your space via email.
You will not have a confirmed space until payment is received. Space is limited and slots will not be held without payment. Payment is not refundable if you are unable to attend. If you would like to ask Phoenix to send a contact from the waiting list to recover your payment – then please inform her by May 25th.

All sellers will be asked to be at the Dnote between 1200-1215pm to set up. Please do not attempt to set up earlier as you will have a designated area assigned.

If you are unable to arrive by 1230pm – your area may be used by other sellers so please be on time to ensure you do not forfeit your spot.

Each year, I am trying to get this more and more organized. It is often chaotic at first so please abide by the requests so that we may move in quickly and have a successful and fun time!

Great workshop with Rachid tomorrow! (Saturday, March 7)

Hey all, I don't know how many of you get Eva's emails, and this is just copy and pasted from one of them. I would HIGHLY recommend taking this workshop with Rachid. I have studied with him under this topic in both private and semi-private lesson settings, and the information and experience is absolutely invaluable for any serious dancer.

Dance: 2pm - 4:15 - Musicality for Dancers ($40.)

Rachid can teach you how to sing with your body!Learn how to hear and interpret bellydance music. Rachid plays his instruments or sings live during his teaching. Dance music often contains an instrumental taqsim (improvisation) which adheres to musical modes (maqam) that invoke certain feelings in the listener. A dancer also can learn to "hear" and express these feelings in her dance to create a powerful and harmonious connection with the audience. There are musical cues, modes, rhythms, phrasing, and meaning in the melody and words of the songs we dance to. Rachid reveals those in his teaching, as well as letting you know what a musician is looking for when you dance to his music.

What has made American Tribal Style (ATS) Belly Dance such a wildly popular belly dance form? The power and presence of the moves? The lush and exotic costuming? The sense of community created by a group of dancers working together in an 'improvisational choreography'? All of the above??? Come and find out for yourself with an instructor with almost 20 years training in ATS! In this class you will learn the fundamentals of tribal style steps, foot and arm placement, posture, simple zil patterns and the mechanics of each movement. Although this class is suitable for the new student, it is also beneficial for the more advanced student to review, refine and "polish" their ATS movement technique. Movements are repeated every 20 weeks or so. There is no official start or stop to the sessions. You may begin taking this class at any point during our curriculum as each week we break down the movements from the ground up. Prerequisite: there is no prerequisite to start taking Tribal Techniques.
