My basic understanding is this: Triabal dancing uses a set of cues to allow the dancers to be in synch while doing improve; while cabaret tends to be mostly choreographed. I understand this is a simplified understanding.
Recently in my class I learned that cabaret tends to dance more with the torso while tribal tends to dance with the limbs. Again, this is overly simplified. Can anyone help me understand?

Hey guys....hold the date for the 6th annual bellydance swap at the Dnote. This is going to be a fun one!!!

Last year was a little nutty so I am going to do the sign up a little different this year. Please read below...we also will have some fun surprises, demos, fashion show, history discussions, etc this year.

When: Aug 30th at the Dnote from about 2pm to 6pm - No cover charge!

If you would like to sell:
Contact Phoenix at phoenix_dancing@hotmail.com
* Each person will get 1-2 tables and a placement before you arrive so you know. We will have the room set up. If you need more space then speak with me and we can work it out.
* The space will be limited so get your spot soon.
* I am not asking sellers to help set up or tear down this year so I may ask that each seller contribute $3-5 to tip the waitstaff.
* Also - I will ask that everyone selling or at least one representative be there by 130pm at the latest...people showing after that time will be giving up their space (this is due to some of the issues with space last year).
* We will need racks, additional tables, and mirrors...

I will have a sign up sheet and once you have confirmed - you will get an email back with where your table will be reserved. We had so many last year it got kind of nutty.

I will have a walkin selling area too for those that are unsure...but this will be a shared space.

You can start signing up with me anytime...once the slots are gone then I will consider us full....I hate to do this but did not limit last year and it was just so crazy! So I really have to.

I do this every year for free and each year we try something new...I think you will be excited about the ideas for this year - more details to come on that....

The Belly Dance Swap is a yearly event to clean out your closest - you may have one item (and can share space) or many. If you make something special or doing costuming - then feel free to promote that. This is meant to be a shopping bazaar or trade place....with some fun stuff and community gathering!

If you want to shop...well then just show up between 2-6pm and see the demos and such...have fun.

These Salawar have such lovely detailing and colors, we also think they look great worn alone! They are made from gently-used 'vintage silk' sari fabrics from India. One size, with an elastic and drawstring waistband that fits most waists and hips. All Salawar tend to be one of a kind. Choose individual pants below. These Salawar look great on men, too!
punch cards: 5 classes for $45 or 10/$80

What has made American Tribal Style (ATS) Belly Dance such a wildly popular belly dance form? The power and presence of the moves? The lush and exotic costuming? The sense of community created by a group of dancers working together in an 'improvisational choreography'? All of the above??? Come and find out for yourself with an instructor with almost 20 years training in ATS! In this class you will learn the fundamentals of tribal style steps, foot and arm placement, posture, simple zil patterns and the mechanics of each movement. Although this class is suitable for the new student, it is also beneficial for the more advanced student to review, refine and "polish" their ATS movement technique. Movements are repeated every 20 weeks or so. There is no official start or stop to the sessions. You may begin taking this class at any point during our curriculum as each week we break down the movements from the ground up. Prerequisite: there is no prerequisite to start taking Tribal Techniques.

Dress for class: Any fitted top and pants or skirt that provides full range of movement. Hip scarves, jeweled or tassel belts are optional. Quest Center requests socks or dance shoes. You will eventually need a pair of zils (finger cymbals).

Tribal Techniques, Level 2 (Intermediate) with Jennifer Secrist Goran
Every Tuesday 6:45- 7:30pm
Boulder Quest Center ~ 1200 Yarmouth
www.boulderquest.com ~ 303-440-3647
punch cards: 5 classes for $45 or 10/$80

Continue your exploration of Tribal Style Belly Dance with this fun, on-going class! Here we will start using all of the movements & steps you've learned in Tribal Techniques, Level 1 in new formations geared towards group improvisational dancing. Emphasis for this class will be on gaining leading and following skills thru development of cues, transitions and fundamental formations. Prerequisite: I recommend completing at least one full session (20 weeks) of Level 1 before attending this class.
Dress for class: A choli top is preferred along with any pants or skirt that provides full range of movement. Hip scarves, jeweled or tassel belts are optional. Quest Center requests socks or dance shoes. You will need your own zils.

Also thought the light show was annoying: sort of cheapy 1960's hippie acid rock or something.

I'm giving a presentation to a student organization (Pagan Student Alliance) on my campus this upcoming Monday on belly dancing as a spiritual practice, so I thought I'd ask people a few questions about it so that I'll have more than my own experience to give in this presentation!

If belly dance is considered spiritual to you...
How/why is it considered to be a spiritual practice to you?
Do you integrate it into any rituals that coincide with whatever religion(s) you follow?

I'd really appreciate any input - I don't want to just give my own experience since it's so limited. Also, if anyone has any good websites on dance as a spiritual/religious practice I'd be so glad to get them from you!

Thanks,
Amy

I'm going to be needing some actor headshots pretty soon and figured if I was going to be getting those done, I should probably get some belly dance pictures as well. Does anyone have any recommendations for good (and reasonably priced) photographers in the area who could do both of these?

We are pleased to announce that we are going through the final bits of recording and editing before we send our tracks off to be mastered and mass-produced! Hopefully we will have the LP ready to sell sometime in April.

We are very grateful to those of you who have prepaid the LP for being so patient with us. We really tried to get this thing finished this winter, and we apologize that this didn't happen--we want to provide you with the best possible recordings, so instead of rushing the album out we decided to postpone it.
That being said, we are VERY pleased with the results so far and will be delivering to you a professional product.

Once we release the album we will be putting together a CD release party and will be available for touring around later this year.
If you are putting together a bellydance workshop weekend somewhere and want a great live band drop us a line!!!

Another bulletin will be sent out the day we send the tracks out with a more precice release date!
Thank you for all of your amazing support and wonderful compliments.
